Josh King’s Viral Slide-Out MagSafe Gamepad Finds New Home at OhSnap

When 19-year-old Josh King first pitched his idea of creating a single-handedly redefine mobile gaming with a 3D-printed gamepad, drawing direct comparisons to Steve Jobs, it seemed like an ambitious claim. However, as we delve deeper into the evolution of this innovative project, it becomes clear that OhSnap’s vision for mobile gaming is nothing short of revolutionary.

From Prototype to Reality

The journey from a simple 3D-printed controller to the sleek and sophisticated gamepad attachment we see today has been remarkable. With OhSnap behind the design, Josh King’s creation has transformed into an unparalleled gaming experience for mobile devices. The Mcon gamepad attachment boasts an array of features that will leave gamers in awe:

  • Pocket-Friendly Design: Measuring no taller or wider than an iPhone, this gamepad is perfectly designed to slip into your pocket without adding bulk.
  • MagSafe Pattern of Magnets: Seamlessly attach the gamepad to your magnetic ring device using the MagSafe pattern of magnets.
  • Retractable Design: The entire gamepad retracts underneath your phone, much like the slide-out keyboard phones or PlayStation Phones of old. This retractable design ensures you can use your phone as a phone without any hindrance.

A New Level of Gaming Experience

The Mcon’s hinge in action is nothing short of impressive, thanks to its spring-loaded arm that pops out at the push of a button and slightly angles your device towards your face. The inclusion of Nintendo Switch-esque analog sticks with drift-resistant Hall effect sensors takes mobile gaming to new heights.

  • Analog Sticks: These clickable buttons offer an unparalleled level of precision and control, mimicking the iconic Nintendo Switch experience.
  • Fold-Out Grips: Unfold the grips to hold your gamepad like a full-size console, providing a more immersive gaming experience.
  • Shoulder Buttons and Triggers: A full set of shoulder buttons and triggers ensures an authentic gaming experience on-the-go.

A Partnership Born

Two months ago, Retro Game Corps showcased a prototype that left everyone impressed. Since then, Josh King has been hard at work, and it’s clear that OhSnap has taken the reins to bring this vision to life.

  • Initial Challenges: As King explains on YouTube, he initially tried to start his own company around the gamepad, attracting investors and manufacturing boards before running out of funds. This led him to reach out to OhSnap about a partnership.
  • Partnership Benefits: The collaboration with OhSnap has enabled them to refine their design and bring it to market.

A Launch in Sight

The Mcon will be available in black and white at launch, but Josh King has hinted that they’re working on various colorful parts for mix-and-match options. Speaking of which, the cost is still a mystery, with OhSnap planning to launch a Kickstarter campaign on January 2nd to raise funds.

Stay Tuned for Updates

With CES 2025 in Las Vegas just around the corner, I’ll be getting my hands on a prototype next month and sharing my thoughts on how it feels. In the meantime, you can sign up now to get updates on this groundbreaking project.

This is an exciting time for mobile gaming enthusiasts, and we can’t wait to see how OhSnap’s Mcon gamepad attachment revolutionizes the industry. Will you be joining the revolution?
